Since we arrived almost a month ago we have been impressed by the amount of homes and businesses who really go to town with their Halloween displays. Arriving at Adams Inn in the trendy Adams Morgan district of Washington DC a few days ago the Halloween montage at the street entrance greeted us warmly and items have been added since.
Yesterday was 31 October and as we strolled back in the early evening dusk to catch our bus back from downtown we neared the White House and found a long queue of adults and children all beautifully adorned in Halloween outfits. Steve laughed when I suggested that Barack was throwing a big Halloween party in his garden for local families, but sure enough when I asked a 'queuer' my theory was confirmed correct - it was even on the BBC news; shame we had no ticket.
This was nothing to our surprise when we turned into our beautiful residential street to find the road closed off to traffic and hundreds of Halloween trick-or-treaters (mostly families all dressed up) everywhere. Residents sits on their decorated steps or front gardens - again all in fancy dress - giving out treats to the children. It was like a huge party atmosphere and the decorations were great, our Inn even had an indoor hallway decorated and the fire station across the street was opened up too.
I used to like throwing Halloween parties when the children were younger but this was something else!
